Sacrifice

So we are coming up to Memorial Day weekend, a three day holiday when people and families can enjoy the extended time off to do whatever recreational activities they enjoy most.  Play sports, lounge around the pool, take a trip to the lake or fight the crush of the Memorial Day sales that the TV has bombarded us with for the last month. 

All in all we will return to work next Tuesday feeling refreshed with tales of what a great weekend we had.  But how many of us will take the time to stop and think what the weekend is really all about, whilst we are all enjoying ourselves?  Who made it all possible and why?

Spend Some Time

Last week’s blog, “Everything Must Change,” brought about some comment, and one referred to the “daily change hour” that I mentioned in the last paragraph.  The point of this was ~ we all have agendas, itineraries and lists of what we have to do in a day and we set aside time to complete the tasks. 

How many of us actually take the time to consciously think about change?  For this to make sense, I need to describe my definition of change in the business world, what it means and why it’s so necessary.

Everything Must Change

How many times have we sat in meetings to plan for the future, upturns and downturns alike, talked about strategy and improving the bottom line?  Have you ever seen an agenda item at one of these meetings designated – CHANGE?  Almost never!  It never appears.  People generally like to talk the talk about change, but really, deep down inside, they don’t want to walk the walk.

Somethin’ Stupid

Last night on my way home from work I stopped for gas at the local 7-Eleven.  Driving an Expedition showing empty on the gauge meant I was standing at the pump for quite a long time.  Looking around me I saw three young lads, early to mid-teens I guess, standing with their backs to me looking at the DVD rental machine.  I was horrified at the sight, although I’ve seen it several times before, unfortunately on a growing number of occasions.
